Under 18s banned from getting Botox for cosmetic reasons in England

October 4, 2021 by CarlFrascina

People under 18 years of age will no longer be able to get Botox and dermal lip fillers for cosmetic reasons under a new law in England.

The law applies to those visiting from outside England or who have the permission of someone aged over 18.

Treatments can, however, still be approved by a medical practitioner to be carried out by a doctor, nurse, dentist or pharmacist on those under 18 with a clinical need.

The change comes after MPs said a “complete absence” of regulation of beauty treatments such as Botox and fillers is putting the public at risk – and “maintaining the status quo is not an option”.

There was a complete lack of a legal framework of standards around non-surgical aesthetic treatments, which has left consumers at risk and undermined the industry’s ability to develop, the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Beauty, Aesthetics and Wellbeing found.

Cosmex Clinic is now CQC registered

October 1, 2021 by CarlFrascina

Award-winning Cosmex Clinic in Cambridge is now CQC registered.

Part of the clinic’s on-going pursuit to offer patients the very best standards of care, their application and subsequent registration with the Care Quality Commission is a vital step forward for Cosmex Clinic.

The CQC is the independent regulator of health and social care in England – they inspect, monitor and regulate services like ours to ensure they meet the fundamental standards of quality and safety.

This allows patients to make an informed choice when it comes to undergoing cosmetic and aesthetic treatments, as well as health treatments pertaining to weight loss and more.

As part of this registration, potential patients will be able to search the CQC database to find inspection reports, contact details and services.

As a result of their new CQC registration they will be able to offer weight loss treatments, and will be inviting other third party medical practitioners to add to the range of treatments available from Cosmex Clinic.

Clinical Director Lou Sommereux, who launched Cosmex Clinic back in 2002, says the registration success a momentous milestone for everyone who works at the clinic, as well as what it will bring moving forward.

“We are proud to be leading the way in Cambridge for safe and regulated aesthetic and medical treatments. Gaining CQC registration helps us to offer an even more diverse selection of treatments to our patients, while also ensuring they understand they’re receiving the best in medical care.

“As a leading clinic in the region, we know our patients expect a high-quality service, and we hope this added accreditation provides confidence and reassurance that we are proudly operating to the highest of medical standards.

“It’s a very exciting period of change and growth for our clinic and we look forward to welcoming more patients, old and new, through the doors in coming months.”

UK seeing a rise in laser tattoo removal treatments

October 1, 2021 by CarlFrascina

As we leave the pandemic behind, there’s no doubt the aesthetics industry is thriving. As well as the perhaps unsurprising boom in treatments for facial rejuvenation, clinics are reporting a rise in laser tattoo removal treatments.

A recent report noted 89 per cent of the beauty and aesthetics industry have experienced more demand for treatments with tattoo removal being high on the list, particularly for millennials. It’s now thought 1 in 9 people here in the UK have chosen to remove an unwanted tattoo and the motivations for patients seeking out laser tattoo removal treatments vary.

The top reasons why patients are heading to clinics and salons to erase artwork on the skin include having body art and regretting it, worrying tattoos will prevent them from getting a job, and ‘fading’ a current design in order to cover the area with a new tattoo.

John Culbert at Cambridge Stratum says the demand for laser tattoo removal devices post-pandemic shows there’s a real drive for clinics to provide effective treatments that can breakdown stubborn ink in record time.

He says: “With the increased demand from patients seeking tattoo removal treatments, in turn we’re seeing that reflected in clinics and salons choosing to invest in quality tattoo removal lasers.”

“We’ve noticed the demand for laser tattoo removal devices increase significantly in recent months, particularly those looking to invest in state of the art picosecond technology. Currently our most popular device, the Stratum Pico 300, is making waves within the industry because it offers both value and outstanding results.”

While there has been much discussion about the cost effectiveness of choosing a picosecond tattoo removal laser over the widely used nanosecond devices, with the Pico 300 and Pico 500 devices practitioners and HCPs can affordably offer tattoo removal, pigmented lesion removal and even skin rejuvenation all with one device.

John says: “Making picosecond laser mainstream by being more affordable, Cambridge Stratum is leading the charge when it comes to revolutionising the way we remove tattoos. In what is a mostly unregulated aesthetics market, providing quality high performance technology that’s way more effective than a typical nanosecond laser but built for safety is what sets the Pico 300 apart from the competition.”

Offering up to 16x more power for the same fluence as a 5ns Q switch laser is as close to the optimum for a tattoo removal laser and represents the current laser in state of the art technology in this field.

Key benefits of the Pico 300 include:

  • produces a power output 1,600% higher than any 5ns laser at the same fluence
  • the breaking down of smaller particles meaning better clearance of the tattoo
  • stronger photo acoustic and photothermal effects that can shatter particles of any colour
  • build quality of this high performance machine is second to none and is fully backed by the Cambridge Stratum 3 year warranty.

Operating the Stratum Pico 300 could not be easier with a clear and uncluttered Android touch screen that displays the current status of the machine settings including the spot size in use, wavelength is use, energy, fluence and pulse rate. All of these parameters are detected directly by the machine and reduce the risk of operator errors from occurring.

The additional 20x diffraction array lens also turns the Stratum Pico 300 into a multi-function platform for skin resurfacing and skin rejuvenation.

Lou Sommeroux, Clinic Director at Cosmetic Clinic in Cambridge, has reported a rise in patients seeking out treatments to remove unwanted body art, with many seeking to remove name tattoos. She uses the Pico 300 and says:

“Patients have a variety of reasons for choosing to undergo treatment to remove unwanted body art; from poor design to fading the tattoo down for a different design to go over the top”

“For a long time some patients have thought that they were ineligible for laser tattoo removal because they has coloured body art which less powerful devices couldn’t breakdown, but with the Pico 300 we can breakdown all colours on any skin type.”

BAAPS launches a new initiative advancing the framework for mental health assessment in cosmetic surgery

August 8, 2021 by CarlFrascina

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) has launched a new initiative aimed at advancing the framework for mental health assessment in cosmetic surgery.

Around 20% of BAAPS surgeons referred patients on for second opinions in 2020, but with rising concerns about mental health and body dysmorphia, the course has been designed to fully equip surgeons with the necessary skills to respond to psychological factors in patient consultations, including the ability to refuse those deemed psychologically unfit for surgery.

“Carrying out a thorough psychological assessment before any surgery is crucial”, says BAAPS Council Member Caroline Payne. “One of the hardest things to deal with is how to say no to patients and this course teaches us how to set those boundaries, when to ask for second opinions, when to ask for onward referrals. As plastic surgeons it is crucial to have a real insight into the psychological as well as surgical aspects of caring for patients undergoing aesthetic surgery and an appreciation of when referral to a clinical psychologist may be in a patients’ best interests rather than surgery.”

The launch comes in the same week that Katie Price announced her latest bout of cosmetic surgery; a full body overhaul, complete with liposuction, eye and lip lifts, and a Brazilian bum enhancement. Speaking to This Morning, the star responded to claims that she may be suffering from body dysmorphia, a mental health condition that the course addresses how to identify.

Former BAAPS President Rajiv Grover, commented: “There is evidence that suggests people who struggle with their psychological health can feel pressured to turn to ‘quick fix’ procedures to improve their appearance.”

“Surgery is not a cure for unhappiness”, says Caroline Payne, warning that, “It can actually lead to depression in patients who are not properly screened beforehand.”

A day-long programme developed by clinical health psychologists Dr Joy MacInnes and Dr Esther Hansen, “Psychological Skills for Surgeons”, covers a series of didactic lectures and face-to-face interactions, all with the aim of improving surgeon’s understanding of patient psychology.

The first half of the programme centres on the patient-surgeon relationship and aims to uncover the aspirations of the patient in order to allow surgeons to effectively manage expectations.

The second part is focused on exploring what the patient considers to be the physical function of surgery. It explores the psychological impact of surgery and considers the psychosocial expectations of the patient, addressing how to set boundaries with regard to onward referrals and second opinions.

The applied psychological theory covered in parts one and two will be put into practice in the latter half of the programme. Using actors to enact scenarios, surgeons will be tested on their ability to respond to patients’ evolving understanding of surgery, factoring in how to adjust their decision making according to behavioural changes.

The final part of programme addresses how to respond to psychosocial factors, including dissatisfaction with surgery, psychological distress and mental health concerns, both previous and ongoing. Part 4 will also delve into the topic of body dysmorphia, how to set up a framework for assessment and onward referral to a psychological professional.

John Bannon Pharmacy Launches Universkin Skincare Service

April 1, 2021 by Laura Casewell

John Bannon Pharmacy is thrilled to announce it has adopted a new skincare range – Universkin – into the business for 2021.

Universkin is a globally recognised brand, created by health care professionals, for health care professionals. With a potent serum base, 19 active ingredients that create 1.8 million combinations, this prescriptive skincare range provides a bespoke solution to treat all individual skin types.

Each client’s unique formulation is created via an in-clinic app, which helps the clinician to individually tailor the serums to suit exactly the patient’s individual needs. Universkin provides the clinician with a bespoke skincare range, yet still allows clinicians to help patients in current lockdown restrictions.

If we learned one lesson during lockdown, it was just how much we had neglected our skincare, and we have been reminded all too often, with the expansion of on-line, virtual calling that our faces and skin need care and investment. In 2020 skincare purchases rose substantially, and the “zoom face” was a recognised condition, making now the perfect time to launch Universkin to the UK market.

Andy Pickin at John Bannon Pharmacy says:

“2021 is a year full of opportunities – no longer can we stand still and wait for change. We must make our own change and expand and seize the new opportunities that present.  We want to work closely in partnership with our customers to support their business growth, and Universkin is a great step forward.

“We all know 2020 was more than challenging, but we have learned how to better help our customers by providing bespoke services and a close partnership that will benefit both customer and patients alike. By offering this service we believe we can help clinics to enter the skincare world with minimal up-front costs and a bespoke delivery service. Life made easy, which is something we all want this year!”

As well as targeting the aesthetics industry and offering competitive prices, the John Bannon team is committed to expanding the exposure of Universkin and so will also be engaging the end users too with a national PR drives.

Andy says:

“The goal here is to engage the UK audience in the buying cycle for bespoke skincare treatments while clinics remain hindered in their ability to perform treatments and face to face consultations. Engaging consumers will drive them through to the industry, where our service offers HCPs the ability to support their patients with skincare and a complete ‘closed loop’ revenue opportunity.”

John Bannon Pharmacy will be running online training and hosting workshops in the coming months to engage and educate clinic owners. To register for the latest event please sign up here.

British College of Aesthetic Medicine (BCAM) launches wellbeing initiative

January 30, 2021 by Laura Casewell

The British College of Aesthetic Medicine (BCAM) has enlisted the help of the world’s first mindfulness policy institute to launch its 20th ANNIVERSARY MINDFULNESS AND WELLBEING INITIATIVE, offering support and advice to members during the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

BCAM President Dr Uliana Gout said: “BCAM led the way in 2020 with its ‘fact not opinion’ guidance for members about opening clinics and treating patients, and now we’re taking the lead again with this new wellbeing initiative in the College’s 20th anniversary year.

“We’re delighted to be working with the world’s foremost organisation, The Mindfulness Initiative, that advises global legislators on how to incorporate mindfulness in public policy. We are spearheading the aesthetic medicine sector with the BCAM 20th Anniversary Mindfulness and Wellbeing Initiative and are committed to providing the best support to members, both with practical business advice and holistic guidance that is so pertinent at this time.”

The Mindfulness Initiative is an independent think tank and clerk to the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Mindfulness. Its Deputy Director Ruth Ormston will deliver a members-only session for BCAM next month, exploring the benefits of mindfulness and offering tips on incorporating it into the day to improve health and mental wellbeing. Ruth will also lead a short mindfulness practice for members so they can experience it first-hand.

BCAM plans to cover a wide range of wellbeing issues with the BCAM 20th Anniversary Mindfulness and Wellbeing Initiative. As well as live Zoom sessions and videos uploaded to the members area of the BCAM website, the College will signpost useful resources and share tips from fellow members. Many of these resources have been provided free of charge by The Mindfulness Initiative, including specific help for people staying home during lockdown.

BCAM trustee Dr Bhavjit Kaur is leading on the new initiative on behalf of the College and hopes it will offer support, guidance and comfort to members who are facing challenges during the pandemic.

She said: “It’s been a tough time for everyone since the first lockdown last March. Many of our members have returned to the NHS frontline or are facing issues with their businesses or personal lives.

“BCAM recognises the need to support members in many different ways and I am passionate about wellbeing and mindfulness so I wanted to provide some practical help that members can easily access.

“As healthcare professionals, we always want to understand the science behind everything so being able to offer members a session with the world’s leading mindfulness organisation will provide a fantastic springboard for members to further explore for themselves.”

The mindfulness session for BCAM members will be delivered by Zoom on Friday 5 March. For more information about joining BCAM, please email Helen.Calkin@BCAM.ac.uk

BAAPS Current Statement on Cosmetic Surgery and Covid-19

January 10, 2021 by Laura Casewell

BAAPS president Mary O’Brien has released the following statement:

We are in a global pandemic at a point where the numbers of infections and deaths are rising in the U.K. A National Lockdown has now been introduced by the UK Government.

The Government has produced extensive advice, with some differences between England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

In England with regard to medical care, the Government rules state people can leave their homes for a COVID test, medical appointment or emergency. Medical services are permitted to remain open and there is provision for medical services to carry out non-urgent services safely.

At the same time, “non -essential” businesses have been asked to close, to limit interactions between people and the potential spread of the virus.

Plastic Surgery covers a broad range of surgery and procedures. Some of these procedures include providing emergency care, cancer care and trauma services. Many members of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons will be engaged in supporting the National effort within the NHS in this way and some are also contributing to the vaccination roll out programme. Others may be providing care for a variety of patients, including postoperative patients who have undergone surgery in the past and also from abroad, that need intervention following complications.

Where a need exists and surgery can safely be provided without impacting on the National effort or NHS resources, is within the latest Government rules and is in the patient’s best interests at this point in time, we would support continuity of provision of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
