A survey shows that the public sees cosmetic surgery as an easier option than plastic or reconstructive surgery. Over the last few years, demand for cosmetic surgery has increased dramatically. A team at the University of Iowa wanted to find out whether this change has also altered public perceptions.
The researchers surveyed 216 people in person and on the Internet. They found that cosmetic surgery was seen as being less technically difficult with a shorter recovery time than plastic or reconstructive surgery. But when it came to cost, there was no difference perceived between cosmetic and plastic surgery.
It’s important, perhaps, that surgeons make sure their patients are not underestimating the potential dangers and discomforts that accompany cosmetic surgery.
