Channel 4’s “Love My Face” Doctor says helping patients feel comfortable in their own skin has been ‘life-changing’

This month, Channel 4 introduced Love My Face, an inspiring four-part documentary series that tackles an increasingly important yet often overlooked subject in society – the experience of living with visible facial differences. The series premiered on Thursday, April 10, 2025, at 10 PM and is available to stream on Channel 4+ for early access.

Led by compassionate disability campaigner Jono Lancaster, Love My Face follows individuals navigating the challenges of living with facial differences. From congenital conditions to trauma-induced changes and skin complaints, participants explore a deeply personal journey of self-acceptance and transformation.

Each episode highlights the personal stories of three individuals as they receive tailored mental health support, guidance, and cutting-edge medical consultations.

Episode highlights include Mia, seeking to rebuild her confidence after nine years of living with alopecia, and Gary, who is exploring ways to regain his smile following 20 years of facial paralysis. Each story sheds light on the complexity of emotional and medical journeys while celebrating the resilience and diversity of human experiences.

In tomorrow night’s episode, Dr Nicole Chiang, award-winning Consultant Dermatologist and owner of Lumiere Clinic in Manchester, treats patient Mia, 21, who has suffered from Alopecia since the age of 12.

Dr Nicole Chiang said: “Patients featured on the programme have a lot of emotional trauma and have often been turned away from doctors because their conditions are complex and hard to treat.

“Mia tried to seek help in the past for her alopecia which is where the body’s immune system attacks its own hair follicles, but she couldn’t find anyone that could help her previously.”

“Over an 18 month period we treated Mia with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) supplied by RegenLab across six sessions along with immune suppressant tablets and light therapy.”

By using your body’s natural growth factors, PRP stimulates hair follicles, encouraging regrowth and improving hair density.

PRP is a non-surgical procedure that involves drawing a small amount of your blood, processing it to concentrate the platelets, and injecting the platelet-rich plasma into your scalp. These platelets release growth factors that help repair damaged hair follicles and promote healthier, thicker hair over time.

The procedure usually requires a series of sessions spaced a few weeks apart, followed by maintenance treatments. It’s minimally invasive, has little downtime, and is generally considered safe since it uses your own plasma.

Dr Chiang added: “Mia responded well to the treatment and within three to four months we saw hair growth which is amazing – especially from having no hair at all. The treatment has helped to improve her mental health, confidence and outlook in life.”

At the heart of the show is a state-of-the-art clinic in Yorkshire, where Jono Lancaster collaborates with an elite team of world-class surgeons and medical professionals. These experts employ advanced technology and innovative treatments to help participants address the physical and emotional challenges that impact their confidence and well-being.

The series does more than showcase the revolutionary possibilities of modern medicine; it begins an important conversation about society’s perception of beauty and the resilience and strength of those who challenge these perceptions.

Dr Chiang said: “Another case featured on the show is Susan, a lovely lady who suffered from bone cancer at a young age which resulted in multiple reconstructive surgeries and left her with a lot of pain and tightness caused by old surgical scars.”

“We did a combination of PRP with microneedling which softened her scars, meaning that she could turn her neck for the first time in a long time.”

Dr Chiang added: “It has been life-changing to watch patients who once felt hopeless and stuck regain their confidence and feel comfortable in their own skin.”

Love My Face is a must-watch for medical professionals, advocates of inclusivity, and viewers looking for deeply human and thought-provoking storytelling.

Tune in to Channel 4 every Thursday at 10 PM or stream on Channel 4+ to witness these life-changing transformations.
