Lorraine Perretta, at the International Institute for Anti-Ageing (IIAA), has commented on the new research by Procter & Gamble which highlights the visible ageing effects and degradation of skin by environmental pollutants

“We’ve known for a long time that pollution is one of the main environmental influences on skin ageing and that we can’t rely solely on applying creams to protect our skin. Nourishing skin with antioxidants from the inside is even more impo12503410_xxlrtant because that is where inflammation starts, that leads to lines and wrinkles,” she said.

“Excessive exposure to airborne pollutants, such as in cities, easily depletes the levels of antioxidants that our skin naturally stores. This causes damaging inflammation in the skin, so our need for antioxidants is even greater than usual. Boosting our intake of protective nutrients with rainbow-coloured foods and supplements helps antioxidants to reach the skin all over the body, both day and night, and not just where they are applied externally.”

A good skincare regime should start from the inside. Oral antioxidants, such as vitamin C, contribute to the normal production of collagen, helping keep skin looking youthful. Advanced Nutrition Programme, the British beauty supplements brand created by iiaa to complement topical approaches to skincare, offers Skin Vit C  containing vitamin C and bio-flavonoids: hesperidin, rose hip and rutin.

Newly launched Skin Antioxidant contains a brigade of complementary nutrients including lutein, curcumin, green tea, lycopene, beta-carotene, grapeseed extract and bilberry. The Skin range of supplements is available from www.advancednutritionprogramme.com and skincare therapists and salons nationwide.
