When it comes to cosmetic surgery and aesthetics, there’s something very different in how we look now in comparison to just a few years ago.
Before, it seemed like everyone wanted the big fake-looking ‘Jordan’ style boobs, the frozen head and huge fish lips.
Now, you can’t exactly figure out what people are getting done. Is that the thing?
Today, surgery and tweakments are subtle and people are wanting to look more ‘natural’.
Cosmetic surgery in the UK is undergoing a remarkable surge, reflecting evolving societal norms, advancements in medical techniques, and changing demographics.
With the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) reporting a 5% increase in procedures in 2024, totalling 27,462 surgeries, the spotlight is on the trends and procedures that are driving this growth.
Facial Rejuvenation Becomes a Focal Point
Among the array of trends reshaping the industry, facial rejuvenation is at the forefront. Procedures like face and neck lifts increased by 8%, while brow lifts soared by an impressive 20%. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, also saw a significant 13% rise, and is now the third most popular cosmetic procedure. These trends highlight a collective desire to tackle signs of ageing with subtle yet impactful surgical interventions.
Societal factors are also driving this demand. The increased scrutiny that came with remote working and a proliferation of video calls heightened awareness of facial aesthetics, leading individuals to seek refinement, rather than transformation, in their looks. Additionally, with the pension age rising, professionals are increasingly prioritising procedures that help them maintain confidence and relevance in the workplace.
Body Contouring Gains Popularity
Body contouring surgeries, such as liposuction (+8%), tummy tucks (+6%), and thigh lifts (+24%), are becoming increasingly sought after. This is, in part, tied to the ripple effects of the weight-loss injection trend, with medications like, Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy gaining traction. These medications have contributed to sudden weight loss in some patients, often leaving behind sagging skin that body contouring procedures work to tighten and reshape.
Such procedures no longer purely focus on aesthetics but also provide functional and psychological benefits. For instance, tummy tucks and breast reductions have shown positive impacts on both physical comfort and mental health, as noted by medical practitioners.
Shifts in Male Cosmetic Surgery
While male cosmetic procedures represent just 6.5% of all surgeries, trends indicate shifting preferences. Face and neck lifts among men surged by 26%, mirroring women’s growing interest in anti-ageing surgeries. However, rhinoplasties and liposuctions saw decreases of 14% and 7% respectively. Experts note that fluctuations in male surgeries can appear more pronounced simply due to the smaller base numbers of male patients.
The reduced stigma surrounding male aesthetic enhancements and greater societal acceptance of men’s grooming could foster further growth in this segment, particularly for procedures targeting ageing concerns.
The Role of Non-Surgical Treatments
While the above trends relate to surgical options, non-surgical treatments are also playing a pivotal role in the cosmetic landscape. Botox saw a 5% increase, while dermal fillers surged by 27%, driven by innovations that produce quicker, more natural-looking results. These treatments also serve as an entry point for patients considering more permanent surgeries.
What’s next?
The rise of cosmetic surgery is underscored by a shift in public attitudes toward self-care and wellness. With procedures becoming more accessible, affordable, and normalised, more people are viewing surgery as a tool to enhance not only their appearance but also their confidence and quality of life. For healthcare professionals, this trend emphasises the importance of ethical practice and patient education to meet the growing demand responsibly.
As the UK’s cosmetic surgery scene grows, one thing is clear: whether it’s facial rejuvenation, body contouring, or subtle enhancements, the focus remains on achieving natural, enduring results that align with individual aspirations.
