Snack Smarter This September: Join Snack-tember 2025!

This September, the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) is launching Snack-tember 2025, a month-long initiative designed to promote healthier snacking habits among children and young people. Replacing the traditional Healthy Eating Week, this extended campaign provides more opportunities for schools, parents, and caterers to encourage nutritious snack choices. With a goal of reaching over a million young people across 6,000 schools, Snack-tember aims to make a lasting impact on children’s health.

Why Snack-tember?

Snacking is a part of daily life, especially for children and teenagers. However, many snacks available today are high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats, contributing to poor dietary habits. Snack-tember focuses on educating young people about healthier alternatives, providing fun activities, resources, and expert guidance to encourage better choices.

The initiative places a particular emphasis on students in the early years of secondary school. As children gain more independence in their food choices, this stage is crucial for shaping lifelong healthy habits. By making nutritious snacks more appealing and accessible, Snack-tember helps students develop a balanced approach to eating.

What’s Happening During Snack-tember?

Throughout the month, participating schools will have access to a variety of resources, including engaging lesson plans, activity ideas, and simple, healthy recipes. School caterers will receive guidance on offering better snack options, while parents and carers will be provided with tips to support healthy choices at home.

To ensure the initiative meets the needs of young people, the BNF conducted The Great Snack Survey in November 2024. Over 2,000 young people aged 10-13 shared insights on their snacking habits, preferences, and spending behaviours. These findings have helped shape the materials and strategies for Snack-tember, ensuring they are relevant and effective.

How to Get Involved

Schools, clubs, and organisations can register to take part in Snack-tember through the British Nutrition Foundation’s website. Once signed up, they’ll gain access to exclusive resources to help make the month a success. Parents and carers can also support the initiative by encouraging healthier snack choices at home and discussing the importance of balanced nutrition with their children.

The BNF has partnered with Veg Power and is seeking additional support from retailers and caterers to expand the programme’s reach. By working together, we can create a healthier environment for young people and promote lifelong positive eating habits.
