The Surprising Side of Slimming Down
Reality TV star and media personality Gemma Collins has always been outspoken about her body image and wellness journey. Recently, she’s made headlines for shedding around two stone since beginning treatment with the weight loss jab Mounjaro—an NHS-approved medication. But with her newfound slimmer figure came an unexpected and unwelcome side effect: premature ageing.
In a candid interview, Gemma didn’t hold back.
“My crow’s feet are on another level,” she admitted.
“I looked in the mirror and thought, ‘Oh my God, I look about 90.’”
While the medication has certainly helped her achieve rapid weight loss, it’s also led to what many now call “Ozempic face”—a term used to describe the sagging and hollowing of facial features due to sudden fat loss.
What is “Ozempic Face”?
“Ozempic face” refers to the unintended aesthetic changes that can occur when facial fat diminishes quickly, especially in individuals who lose weight rapidly through medication. This volume loss can result in more pronounced wrinkles, hollow cheeks, and an overall aged appearance.
Gemma confessed that her once plump and youthful face now looks markedly different.
“I was over the moon about being smaller,” she said, “but I didn’t expect it to make me look older.”
Weighing the Risks and Rewards
Mounjaro, like other GLP-1 medications, can be effective in supporting weight loss by regulating appetite and blood sugar. However, it is not without side effects. Beyond aesthetic concerns, users have reported nausea, digestive issues, and even hair loss.
Medical professionals advise anyone considering such treatments to be fully informed about the physical and emotional effects that can come with significant body changes. For some, these changes may require follow-up cosmetic procedures, such as dermal fillers, to restore volume and confidence.
Body Positivity and Informed Choices
Gemma’s honesty shines a light on an often-overlooked consequence of weight loss journeys in the public eye. Her experience reminds us that beauty standards are evolving and that feeling good should go beyond a number on the scale.
“I love the way I feel, but I want my face back too,” she added.
Gemma is now reportedly considering cosmetic treatments to help address the changes in her facial appearance.
