Fats Your Lot: Plastic surgeon reveals cutting-edge fat transfer technique revolutionising the cosmetic industry

January 19, 2018 by Laura Casewell

Fat transfer with body-jet replaces out dated liposuction procedures and can even offer an implant-free boob job

A top UK plastic surgeon is leading the way for patients seeking cosmetic procedures, such as lipo and mummy makeovers, by offering an alternative that’s both safer and more efficient.

Mr Gary Ross, a Manchester surgeon, noticed the trend shifting from fat removal to fat transfer in the latter part of 2017, and believes 2018 will also be the year we see patients ditch implants for volumising areas with fat.

Specialising in body rejuvenation and mummy makeover procedures, Mr Ross uses the body-jet device to take fat from one area of a patient’s body and reintroduce it to another part of the body or face that requires volume; this can include the buttocks, breasts and even cheeks.

Unlike traditional forms of fat removal that are often unreliable and painful, the body-jet technology uses the gentle power of water to contour the body. Fat can be removed in a more gentle way, allowing for less invasive and safer autologous fat transfer.

For those seeking breast enhancement, body-jet can provide a natural boost to volume, in some cases eliminating the need for silicone implants.

BAAPS and BAPRAS member, Mr Ross was one of the first medical professionals in the UK to offer the water-assisted fat transfer procedure, and believes scores of patients will start seeking more natural ways to enhance their bodies.

“In 2017 we saw a greater focus on the ‘less is more’ approach to cosmetic surgery; I am certain this is set to continue this year. With a greater focus on patient safety and faster healing times, body contouring procedures like fat transfer will be big news in clinics across the UK,” Mr. Ross explains.

“The whole Kim Kardashian phase is declining, with most women seeking natural-looking curves over the fake look. This is where body-jet fat transfer is making waves; the treatment is versatile and the results are seriously impressive.”

“One of the benefits of offering body-jet to my patients is how much we can do without implants in terms of volume improvement. Silicone implants have their place, and fat transfer isn’t suitable for everyone, but this is modern way to boost volume to an area without place foreign objects into the body, which can of course cause some patients complications,” he says.

Undergoing body-jet fat transfer is less invasive than traditional lipo techniques, leading to speedier recovery times and patient satisfaction. Using the body-jet, liposuction and fat transfer can be performed in a safe, effective and easy way.

“During treatment, the fat is gently detached from the tissue structure by means of a flat, fan-shaped water-jet and may be aspirated at the same time. The surrounding connective tissue, nerves and blood vessels remain much less traumatised. We are doing remarkable things with body-jet and I know 2018 is going to be the year patients embrace this safer cosmetic procedure to regain or boost volume,” Mr. Ross concludes.

BAAPS SURGEONS WELCOME ‘LIPO LICENCE’

January 28, 2016 by CarlFrascina

The unveiling of a new credentialing scheme allowing surgeons to demonstrate competency in cosmetic surgery is being strongly welcomed as “a significant step in the right direction” by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

The measures announced by the Royal College of Surgeons of England for next Spring offer an improvement to a sector lacking regulation and often seen as the ‘Wild West’.

According to consultant plastic surgeon and BAAPS President Michael Cadier:

“The BAAPS see this as a positive move in the right direction, which is at long last recognising that surgeons who perform cosmetic surgery should have to prove at least a measure of training and demonstrate that they have been exposed to a minimum number of cases.”

“BAAPS are rightly proud to have been at the heart of helping create these new proposals, with the current President and President-Elect leading the two main committees that have brought forward this new initiative.”

Last month at the Association’s Annual Scientific Meeting, surgeons unveiled ground-breaking new Fellowships for training the next generation of surgeons.

The BAAPS have previously offered a solution to the issue of ‘Fly-In-Fly-Out’ (FIFO) surgeons many of whom lack appropriate insurance cover – matters which have been seen to cause serious problems for patients when complications arise.

The BAAPS therefore welcome the recommendation of proving indemnity (medical negligence) cover for the UK – but warn that since measures will not be compulsory, patients will still need to remain vigilant.

Mr. Cadier continues:

“In particular, we welcome the need for surgeons to have a proper medical indemnity policy covering work in the UK, as currently many clinicians from overseas may perform cosmetic surgery in Britain with very limited, overseas-based insurance which leaves patients high and dry if anything goes wrong.”

“BAAPS expect that these proposals will rapidly become an expected minimum standard in the UK – eventually surgeons operating without certification should hopefully find that any mainstream hospital or clinic will not allow them to operate, as they represent a potential risk to patients.”

“Discouragingly, despite the recent findings from Sir Bruce Keogh’s review into our sector, we are still seeing unscrupulous providers that continue to sidestep guidelines for best practice and put profits before patients. It is therefore as important as ever for anyone considering aesthetic surgery to carefully research their surgeon and avoid unqualified or uninsured practitioners. Whilst we’re pleased to see these new measures being implemented, the system remains far from a cure-all.”

Clinic Reports 300% Surge in Women Choosing Fat Transfer

October 16, 2014 by Laura Casewell

iStock_000012153902XLargeClinics have reported an increase in women enquiring for fat transfer over the last 12 months, according to new figures.

The treatment has seen a surge of 324 per cent, suggesting a rise in popularity for softer, more natural-looking cosmetic procedures.

Cosmetic surgeons say this increase in fat transfer enquiries is a far cry from the nineties and naughties trend of slim, high fashion figures.

A spokesperson for EF Medispa, who noticed the rise in enquiries said: “Fat transfer, as well as being minimally invasive, is renowned for achieving a far more natural look than implants, which can often look obvious and harsh. It’s the perfect combination, eradicating unwanted fat from one area and transferring it to an area of choice.”

Welcome to BTL Aesthetics

May 14, 2014 by Laura Casewell

Image-1Established in 1993, BTL Aesthetics has become one of the major world manufacturers of medical devices. Representing the best in body contouring, fat reduction, skin tightening, and anti-wrinkle devices in the UK, BTL’s range of products are both innovative and highly-sought after.

Under their impressive portfolio of groundbreaking products, they’re proud to be showcasing two of the top radiofrequency devices in the UK: the Vanquish and Exilis Elite.

The newest addition to the superior portfolio, Vanquish is an advanced non-invasive procedure that uses radiofrequency waves to kill fat cells without damaging skin or muscle, it has been labelled a ‘breakthrough’ by cosmetic experts as it’s the ONLY contactless device on the market.

Vanquish is a truly revolutionary treatment in non-scalpel body sculpting, and offers the closest treatment to surgical results. Vanquish’s unique design allows treatment of vast areas at one time, making it the largest treatment area in the industry.

It is the first no contact, hands free body contouring device, not only making it consistent but also ensuring little room for human error. This larger treatment area helps to speed up treatment time and make it easier to take care of multiple areas at once.

Vanquish shows the fastest results in permanent fat reduction, and patients may see results as quickly as after their first treatment. Taking an average of 30 minutes per session, patients usually require up to 4 Vanquish treatments, each spaced a minimum of a week apart.

Vanquish has proved to be a safe and reliable method for fat reduction and this exciting new treatment has been featured in several publications such as Harper’s Bazaar and the Daily Mail.

Lee Boulderstone, UK Manager of BTL Aesthetics said:

“Vanquish has been scientifically proven to destroy fat cells, leading to fat reduction in the targeted area. The device offers a remarkable difference when it comes to non-invasive fat reduction techniques.”

“It’s a really exciting time at BTL and we’re proud to add Vanquish to our already sterling portfolio of products,” he concludes.

BTL Aesthetics is also proud to distribute the Exilis Elite system which has been making waves in the UK in recent years. Widely regarded as one of the best high-performance aesthetic devices, the Exilis Elite has redefined radiofrequency (RF) technology to reduce wrinkles, treat laxity and reshape both the face and body – from head to toe – on patients of all ages.

Exilis Elite advances the non-invasive treatment of face and body wrinkles, collagen loss and stubborn flab with its delivery of precise heating and cooling, plus real-time monitoring of skin temperature. This constant detection and control of RF flow allows the physician to reach therapeutic temperatures in the shortest amount of time, providing a predictable and beneficial response while ensuring patient safety and comfort.

While the RF energy is heating the dermis, patients remain relaxed and pain-free as the system’s digital thermometer provides constant feedback as to the skin’s temperature, thus ensuring a comfortable, even treatment. The energy causes the collagen support tissues in the skin to remodel and tighten, thereby stimulating and strengthening the collagen network which improves skin laxity and texture.

The Exilis Elite is the only RF system able to transmit RF and Ultrasound at the same time, and has been awarded the title ‘Best Skin Tightening Device’ at The Aesthetic Show as well as ‘Best Body Shaping Device’ at The Woman’s Choice Awards.

With such a glowing reputation you can see why the Elite has become top of the class. Whether choosing to eliminate the signs of ageing, or recontouring the body, with no downtime and maximum comfort, patient’s choosing Exilis Elite can be sure their aesthetic goals can be met painlessly and precisely.

Expert Opinion

April 14, 2014 by Laura Casewell

10096026_xxlIt’s not only women who are opting for cosmetic procedures. Recent figures show that men are also going under the knife to look good. THSJ asked Dr Sanjay Rajpara

how SmartLipo Triplex can help men suffering with Gynecomastia.

Why should men be considering SmartLipo Triplex to treat Gynecomastia?

Up until now plastic surgery procedures or traditional liposuction have been the only available options for men. I believe men should explore new minimally invasive options as old surgical procedures are associated with more complications- and also they fail to tighten the skin causing irregularities and scarring.

As a minimally invasive technique, lasers have been used for treating Gynecomastia with encouraging results. SmartLipo Triplex is one step ahead as it has the ability to treat this condition with minimum invasion and down time and also ability to tighten the skin giving it the most desirable shape for the men’s chest.

What is SmartLipo Triplex and how does it work?

SmartLipo MPX is the first dual-wavelength laser system specifically designed for body sculpting and weight loss.  Unlike liposuction, which attacks solid fat, this safer alternative zaps fat cells with laser energy delivered through a cannula under the skin. The system’s proprietary pulsing format melts the fat tissue, which is then drained away as waste.

Cynosure’s FDA approved SmartLipo Triplex treatment is equipped with the ThermaGuide feature, which constantly measures the temperature under the skin and controls the output of energy. This ensures that the treatment area stays within a safe range so that it is hot enough to work efficiently, but not so hot as to cause the patient harm.

SmartLipo Triplex laser energy also coagulates the tissue reducing the bleeding; and has a unique ability to heat up the collagen. This results in new collagen formation with tightening of the skin. This in turn reduces the chances of having any loose skin left and sculpts the skin to the body’s contours. Gynecomastia treatment with SmartLipo Triplex causes fewer complications compared to standard surgery and lipolysis; with faster recovery and superior aesthetic results.
