The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has released an update on the safe use of cosmetics. It explains how microorganisms can contaminate cosmetics. Although this is an uncommon occurrence, it can cause serious injuries.

The release advises how cosmetic contamination can be minimised, and recognises poor packaging, poor storage and poor storage conditions as a contributor to the problem.

The FDA also advise that cosmetic firms are legally responsible for making sure their products are safe and free of harmful microorganisms. FDA microbiologists are currently researching the best ways to test cosmetics for these organisms, as well as what types of contaminated cosmetics present the highest risk to consumers.
