Consultant Plastic Surgeon
Applications are invited for this post at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospital NHS Trust. The post will require the successful applicant to work mostly at City Hospital Birmingham but also at Sandwell General Hospital.
The post holder would be expected to support and contribute to the development of breast reconstructive services in the Trust. There will also be a commitment to general plastic surgery and trauma.
The current combined service reflects that of a small sub regional unit, as defined by BAPRAS. The Breast Reconstruction Service is based at the City Hospital and is closely integrated with the Department of Breast Surgery. There is a strong Multidisciplinary Team element with a weekly MDT and combined operation lists four days a week. At full complement, the breast reconstructive team comprises five breast surgeons and three plastic surgeons. We see about 500 breast cancers per year and undertake 100 breast reconstructions per year. In addition, we receive out of area referrals for specialist breast reconstructions.
A full range of breast reconstructive techniques are currently offered and the successful candidate would be expected to complement the existing work of the department.
The directorate also provides Hand surgery, including emergency work, rehabilitation and combined clinics are undertaken at Sandwell hospital
The post holder must be able to demonstrate the ability to work as a member of a team.
There is a full postgraduate programme supported by a modern Medical Education Centre and clinical library with good IT links. The appointee will be expected to contribute to the teaching of medical students and junior doctors. There are close links with the University of Birmingham and the successful applicants may be granted honorary senior lecturer status within the University. An interest in and ability to undertake research would be welcomed.
The department of plastic surgery has close links with Neurophysiology, Rheumatology, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy. There are multidisciplinary clinics with all these specialities. Skin cancer MDT meetings are held with Dermatology.
Applications should have passed the FRCS examination in Plastic Surgery and should demonstrate commitment to breast reconstructive surgery and should have undertaken further training in this subspecialty.
Applications must be included on the GMC Specialist Register or be within 6 months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of the interview.
